Plenty of people around the UK will be blowing off the cobwebs of 2023 and starting the new year on a high by entering the chilly UK waters for a New Year's Day dip. Check out some of the events below.
Traditionally part of the official Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh, the Loony Dook is a dip in the Firth of Forth at South Queensferry, often accompanied by fancy dress. The dook has not officially taken place since 2020 and is not included in the official 1st January 2024 schedule, but many locals will still be convening for an 'unofficial Loony Dook' at 2pm on New Year's Day.
2. New Year's Day Dip, Eastbourne Beach
Heading south, locals to Eastbourne Beach can also brave the waters of the south coast on New Year's Day. Local open water swimming coach Dee, of Fish2Water, is organising a dip from 1pm on New Year's Day. Follow the link to book a place, with a suggested £5 donation on the day.
3. Saundersfoot New Year's Day Swim
Join the 38th annual NYD swim in Pembrokeshire this year on the beautiful Saundersfoot beach. Book your place for £5 and receive a medal if you complete your dip! This community event has raised over £600,000 for charity in the 38 years it has been running.
4. Dock 9 New Year's Day Swim, Salford Quays
You don't have to live on the coast to enjoy a New Year's Day swim in Manchester and Salford. Dock 9 at Salford Quays are organising a swim on NYD with the option of a dip, a 100 metre or a 250 metre swim. Book via the link with funds being raised for charity.
5. Newquay Harbour New Year's Day 'Dip for Clic'
For those in beautiful Cornwall, there is an organised dip at 12 noon at Newquay Harbour raising funds for CLIC Sargent, supporting young people living with cancer and their families.
These are just a handful of swims taking place around the UK on New Year's Day, among many many more. A cold water swim is exhilarating, fun and is an amazing way to start the new year with friends, family or your local community.
