Black Samphire x Wilda: Bringing Environmental Activism to the Film Industry

Black Samphire x Wilda: Bringing Environmental Activism to the Film Industry

Written by Cathy Wippell, Silicon Gothic Ltd.

One of the most amazing things about sustainability is just how creative you can get with it. ‘Black Samphire’, a new environmental folk-horror about water pollution is no exception. The way it interrogates water pollution through the innovative lens of genre films is truly unique and original.

The two lead actors of ‘Black Samphire’, Ishtar Currie-Wilson and Cathy Wippell, were delighted to partner with Wilda for their recent ‘Dip a Day’ challenge they undertook for Surfers Against Sewage. Through the challenge, which involved bathing in cold water for every day of October (Brr!), the actors raised awareness of the water pollution crisis in the UK. And all whilst staying warm in Wilda’s gorgeous wool hats, sustainable t-shirts and even their new open water swimming wetsuit!

The film, which stars BAFTA-winner Cathy Tyson and features a voiceover from multi-BAFTA nominee Stephen Fry, is unique in its blending of environmental activism and the entertainment industry. Whilst executive producers include industry names like BAFTA-winner, Tom Miller, they also involve activists and campaigners like James Wallace (CEO of River Action UK) and Jim Murray. The film is led by Silicon Gothic, who have partnered with Candid Broads Productions.

Sustainability actions on the film include (but are not limited to) undertaking river cleans on the Thames, partnering with the Green Rider campaign and attending active campaigns, such as the recent March for Clean Water.

The team at Silicon Gothic truly believes that we need a broad range of different narratives that work outside of the documentary sphere to engage a wide range of audiences in current day issues like water pollution. Partnering with trailblazing companies like Wilda help us to realise these narratives in a community-driven, sustainable way!
