Anatomy of a Wetsuit: Building The Dart from Concept to Reality

The idea behind The Dart was simple: to create a wetsuit that celebrates the joy of open water swimming while not compromising on function and sustainability. From selecting materials that minimise our impact on the environment to ensuring a perfect balance of colour, flexibility, buoyancy, and a flattering cut every step of development was intentional. Here’s how we built The Dart from the ground up.

The Spark of an Idea

Open water swimming is an addictive experience - wild, meditative, and personal to every swimmer. Yet wetsuits have traditionally been designed with a one-size-fits-all approach, often in muted blacks and greys that don’t reflect the vibrancy of the sport. We wanted to challenge that. The Dart was born out of a desire to create a wetsuit that not only performed at a high level but also embodied the joy and individuality of swimmers. We set to work with Cornwall based designer Lauren Williams, and Somerset based artist Shruti Bhoyar.

Balancing Performance and Sustainability

When it came to materials, we had to strike a careful balance between high performance and environmental responsibility. That’s why we chose Yamamoto limestone neoprene, a material known for its exceptional flexibility, durability, and better carbon footprint compared to petroleum-based neoprene.

To further reduce our impact, we incorporated:

  • Recycled polyester jersey fabric prints – giving waste materials a new life while adding vibrant patterns to The Dart to line the flexible neoprene on the arms and legs. This choice was conscious in ensuring the patterns will last wear after wear with no risk of peeling.
  • Greenwave lining – an innovative plant-based/nylon mix fabric choice that is beautifully soft and provides warmth and comfort without sacrificing sustainability.

Designing for the Open Water

Beyond materials, we have meticulously refined The Dart’s cut and fit. We have worked through multiple prototypes, testing them in real open water conditions to ensure:

  • Unrestricted movement – a wetsuit should enhance, not hinder, a swimmer’s stroke.
  • Targeted buoyancy – supporting the body in a natural swimming position which means you can swim comfortably in both breaststroke and front crawl.
  • Quick-drying and easy putting on/taking off – because nothing kills a swim buzz like struggling with a stubborn wetsuit.

More than a Wetsuit: A Statement

The Dart is more than just swimwear - it’s a declaration of what open water swimming is all about. A celebration of freedom, adventure, and the connection between swimmer and nature. Every decision we made, from the colours and patterns to the ethical sourcing of materials, reflects our brand’s core values: Celebrate, Honesty, Environment, and Purpose.

Diving into the Future

Bringing The Dart from concept to reality has been a journey filled with hurdles, but also immense excitement. It’s proof that performance and sustainability can go hand in hand, and that wetsuits can be more than just functional—they can be bold, expressive, and built with purpose.
