Out with the old, in with the new: Ways to Get Rid of Your Old Wetsuit Responsibly

Out with the old, in with the new: Ways to Get Rid of Your Old Wetsuit Responsibly

When it comes to sustainability, holding on to your existing wetsuit for as long as possible is likely to be the most environmentally friendly option - but like all good things, they don’t last forever. Whether you’ve outgrown your old suit, worn it down with countless miles in cold water, or just want to treat yourself to an upgrade, finding the right way to get rid of your old wetsuit is essential, rather than contributing to more neoprene landfill. Here are several smart, sustainable, and practical ways to dispose of or repurpose your wetsuit when you're ready for a new one - and things to consider when you do upgrade.

1. Donate It

If your wetsuit is still in good condition but no longer fits or suits your needs, consider donating it to a local swim team or open water club. Many young swimmers or beginners are often on a tight budget and would appreciate a wetsuit that still has plenty of life left in it. Some clubs even run wetsuit loan programs, where swimmers can borrow suits for training or races. Check in with your local swimming communities to see if any organisations accept such donations.

2. Sell It

If your wetsuit is still in good condition but you're not interested in donating it, you might consider selling it. Sites like Vinted, eBay and Facebook Marketplace often have people looking for used wetsuits. This is a great option if you’re looking to get a bit of cash to go towards your new suit while helping someone else make use of the gear you no longer need.

3. Repurpose It

If your wetsuit is beyond repair for swimming, don’t throw it out just yet. There are countless ways to repurpose neoprene. If you’re crafty you could turn it into pouches, changing mats or waterproof bags. Neoprene also makes great padding for fragile items when traveling or shipping. Your old wetsuit may have a second life in creative ways that you never considered!

4. Recycle It

Unfortunately, wetsuits are not recyclable through your standard local council recycling. However, many wetsuit manufacturers and outdoor brands are taking steps toward more sustainable practices and offering recycling programs for old wetsuits. Circular Flow is leading the way with their wetsuit recycling scheme, turning used wetsuits into new neoprene sheets which can be used in manufacturing new products.

5. Repair It

If you’re not quite ready to part with your old wetsuit but it is in need of a few repairs, have a look for wetsuit repair initiatives. Bodyline Wetsuits in Newquay will repair wetsuits including those made with Yamamoto neoprene to give your open water swimming wetsuit a longer lease of life.

6. Give It Away

Sometimes, the simplest option is to offer your wetsuit for free. You can share your wetsuit with friends or fellow swimmers who may be new to open water swimming or don’t yet have the funds for a new wetsuit. Websites like Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace are also great platforms where you can post your wetsuit for free. Many people will appreciate a well-maintained suit that could save them a lot of money.

Upgrading your wetsuit doesn’t have to mean throwing the old one away. Whether you donate, sell, recycle, repurpose, or repair your wetsuit, there are numerous ways to give your gear a second life or ensure it doesn’t contribute to environmental waste. If and when you do upgrade, it is also worth considering the type of suit you buy in the first place including its durability and how to properly look after it, so your wetsuit can last you season upon season. So, before you toss your old suit, consider these eco-friendly alternatives, and help make a positive impact on the planet!
